The US got a taste for the 'hot hatch' with the 1983 introduction of the GTI to the US market. The powerful little hatchback - called the Rabbit GTI at the time - was lauded in automotive magazines. In fact, Road and Track said a drive in the GTI was a "cure for your ills" and encouraged enthusiasts to head to their nearest VW dealer.
Over the years, Volkswagen has continued to refine and improve the GTI, especially in performance. Power has more than doubled, growing from a mere 90hp in 1983 to today's 220hp. And, the GTI continues to win awards from automotive publications.
